Building GPS Field Operations Software That Still Works With No Signal

LiveTrace tracks field workers in real time across a Laravel API, a React dashboard, and a React Native app I built solo. The hardest problem was not the GPS. It was what happens when the connection drops.

LiveTrace is a B2B GPS field operations and expense platform I built end to end, a Laravel REST API, a React admin dashboard, and a React Native mobile app for real time GPS tracking, geofenced field visit verification, and automated expense reimbursement for client organizations. I designed and built all three pieces myself, which meant every inconsistency between them was mine to own, and it also meant I could make decisions across the whole stack instead of negotiating an API contract with someone else. The backend is Laravel and PostgreSQL, using Sanctum for authentication in two different modes at once: token based auth for the mobile app, and cookie based SPA auth for the admin dashboard. That split sounds like a small detail, but it shapes a lot of the API design underneath it, since a mobile client that might lose connectivity mid request needs different retry and session assumptions than a browser tab that is always online. On top of that I layered Laravel Reverb for WebSockets, which drives a live team map on the admin side so a manager can watch field workers move in close to real time instead of refreshing a page. The mobile app is where the actual hard problem lived. Field workers using LiveTrace are, by definition, out in the field, which means spotty signal, dead zones, and moments where a phone simply has no connection at all. I built GPS check in and check out with geofence detection so the app knows when a worker has actually entered or left a job site, but the check in itself cannot depend on a live connection, because the worst possible failure mode is a worker doing everything right at the actual location and the app failing to record it just because a signal dropped for thirty seconds. So every request that matters gets offline queued: the app records the action locally the instant it happens, with the real GPS coordinates and timestamp, and syncs it to the server the moment connectivity comes back, in order, without letting a manager see a duplicate or a dropped event. Expense handling follows the same philosophy. The app calculates mileage and fare automatically from the tracked GPS path instead of asking a field worker to estimate distance by hand, and receipt based expense capture lets someone photograph a receipt on the spot rather than saving paper for an end of week report. Automating that math sounds like a convenience feature, but the real reason I built it that way is that manual mileage estimates are exactly where reimbursement disputes come from, and removing the manual step removes the argument along with it. On the dashboard side, beyond the live map, I built role and permission management, transportation rate configuration so different client organizations can set their own reimbursement rules, and anomaly flagged activity reporting that surfaces things like a check in with an implausible travel time between two sites, so a manager does not have to comb through raw location logs to catch what actually needs attention. The lesson LiveTrace taught me, more than any of my other projects, is that "real time" and "reliable" are not the same requirement, and a field operations app has to satisfy both without either one quietly undermining the other. Real time is the part users notice. Reliable, working correctly even when the network does not, is the part that determines whether they trust the app at all.

HRIS Microservices Architecture

Modernized legacy HRIS modules into Laravel 12 microservices covering recruitment, placement, and employee health. Recruitment services handle applicant tracking and multi-stage screening, while the health service manages records, vaccinations, and wellness programs, all documented with Swagger.

Category: HRIS. Role: Full Stack Developer / Backend Developer. Tech stack: MySQL, Laravel, React.

Key results: Decomposed a fragile legacy PHP HRIS into independent Laravel 12 microservices for recruitment, placement, and employee health; Isolated sensitive employee health records behind their own service and role-based access control, with no shared blast radius with recruitment logic; Documented every endpoint with Swagger so existing payroll and employee-management systems could integrate against a trusted contract; Replaced legacy modules in production without breaking systems already depending on them.

Rant App

An anonymous mobile venting app built around a paper-plane metaphor, matching strangers in real time via Socket.io and Redis sorted sets. Field-level AES-256 encryption and AI-powered moderation from Google Vertex AI keep the platform safe, backed by an ethical, non-addictive gamification system.

Category: AI / Mobile. Role: Full Stack Mobile Developer. Tech stack: Google Vertex AI, PostgreSQL, Prisma, Redis, Expo, Express, Node.js, React Native.

Key results: AES-256-GCM field-level encryption for every rant and message, with IP addresses stored as bcrypt hashes rather than plaintext; Two-layer moderation: a synchronous rule-based layer blocking harassment/crisis language instantly, plus an asynchronous Google Vertex AI layer re-scoring ongoing conversations; Real-time matchmaking via Socket.io with Redis sorted sets indexing every live rant; Purely cosmetic ten-tier reward system with no functional gating, keeping appreciation genuine rather than performative.

ClipFlow

A Windows desktop app that turns long-form video into TikTok-ready clips: cut, captioned, templated, and uploaded automatically. Its AI runs through a personal DeepSeek chat session instead of a paid API, so there is no per-token cost, and it posts directly through TikTok's real Content Posting API.

Category: AI / Creator Tools. Role: Solo Developer. Tech stack: Rust, TypeScript, React, Tailwind CSS, Tauri.

Key results: Zero per-token AI cost, drives a real, logged-in DeepSeek browser session instead of a paid LLM API; Real TikTok Content Posting API integration with correct chunked upload for large clips; Konva-based visual template editor whose crop/watermark/caption layout is mirrored pixel-for-pixel by the actual FFmpeg render; One-click Auto Upload pipeline: slice → caption → render → queue across every connected account.

MyClaudeCode

A free AI coding agent (CLI, Chrome extension, and native host) that runs a planner and executor loop through a logged-in DeepSeek chat session instead of a paid API. The read-only Planner decomposes tasks while the Executor makes changes and verifies them with a real tool call before reporting done.

Category: AI / Developer Tools. Role: Solo Developer. Tech stack: JavaScript, Node.js.

Key results: Zero-API-cost coding agent driven through a real, logged-in DeepSeek chat session instead of a metered LLM API; Planner/Executor separation with no shared context, so every action the Executor takes was explicitly authorized rather than assumed; Executor required to verify its own changes with a real tool call before reporting a task done; Mocked fake-backend of the chat UI enabling local development and testing without touching a live session.
